Unity is key in the support for Ukraine – and we are in it for the long haul

24 August marks six months since Russia invaded Ukraine. Pursuant to resounding worldwide condemnation of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and together with our partners and allies in the EU and NATO, Denmark strongly condemns Russia’s ongoing brutal, unjustifiable and unprovoked war against Ukraine. Denmark shows solidarity with Ukraine through multifaceted and long-term support we provided bilaterally and in concert with our partners and allies. Since the outbreak of the war, Danish support to Ukraine amounts to more than 400 million EUR in military spending and 90 million EUR in civilian, including humanitarian contributions.

We all share the hope that the war and the fighting will end soon, and when it does, we will start the rebuilding of what has been lost in the colossal destruction caused by Russia’s invasion. Hospitals, schools, homes, roads, railways. Rebuilding the future of Ukraine will also be part of our long-term support. In March 2022, President Zelensky asked Denmark to take on a special role in reconstructing the coastal city of Mykolaiv and Denmark has willingly accepted. As part of this commitment, Denmark has donated a first support package of 13.4 million EUR for acute reconstruction mainly aiming at preparing Mykolaiv and others for the coming winter.

In the long-term, the Danish-Ukrainian cooperation in Mykolaiv will focus on Danish strongholds, experiences and technologies in green transition, water supply, shipping, transportation, infrastructure, good governance and business development. With such support, Denmark is helping Ukraine create the foundations for long-term sustainable growth and opening up for Ukraine to take on a strong future position in the international community.

There is, and can never be, a future in waging wars of aggression. But there is a future for Ukraine, and Denmark, together with partners and allies, is committed to creating the necessary conditions for Ukraine's success during and after the war. We are in it for the long haul.
