About the “Cesty Pathways“

The Czech Republic is among the countries with the highest share of Ukrainian refugees per capita with more than half a million arrivals since Russia started the war.

Currently, more than 110,600 Ukrainian refugees aged 10-24 reside in Czechia. Refugee adolescents and youth face unique challenges due to disrupted education, trauma associated with displacement and often separation from their families. Education is not compulsory after 15 years of age and secondary school enrolment among refugee adolescents remains persistently low at an estimated 22% - 30% (compared to 80% in primary school). UNICEF’s consultations with refugee youth revealed a trade-off they face between the desire to continue education and the need to start working due to the financial pressures in displacement. For many youths, disruptions in their education and skills development now will have lifelong consequences.

CESTY programme provides Ukrainian youth in Czechia with opportunities to access education, develop skills and transition to quality first jobs in partnership with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and Ministry of Interior, CESTY brings together all relevant stakeholders including government, civil society organizations, the private sector, embassies, academia and young people themselves to support refugee youth to stay on the path to continued education, skill-building and transition to employment.

Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders in government, in business, and in civil society. Investing in their skills now will pay dividends far into the future as their innovation, leadership and skills will drive post-war reconstruction and recovery of Ukraine.
